Network Virtualisation
By splitting a physical network into a set of virtual (e.g. logical) networks, each assigned for a specific purpose, you can manage each more effectively and isolate any potential negative impact of one on another. The main business drivers are to optimise traffic, improve bandwidth and enable isolation for security purposes.
Network management broadly divides into two categories:
External: managing complex physical networks end-to-end from a logical perspective, without having to worry about the physical architecture.
Internal: creating (and then managing) internal virtual networks between virtual entities such as Virtual Machines (VMs), even within a single physical platform.
Benefits:
- Reduce complexity for the management of connectivity and networks by “hiding” the physical network from the administrator.
- Isolate domains and networks from each other to improve network efficiency and security
